TWO DISTINCT EPINICIAN STYLES: UNIQUENESS OF POETIC EXPRESSION IN BACCHYLIDES’ AND PINDAR’S VICTORY ODES

Two Distinct Epinician Styles: Uniqueness of Poetic Expression in Bacchylides’ and Pindar’s Victory Odes

Abstract
Beginning with the criticism in antiquity scholars have commonly perceived Bacchylides “the Cean nightingale” and Pindar “the Theban eagle,” as two rival poets inepinician poetry with totally different styles. Dionysius of Halicarnassus is one of theearliest critics who explores this stylistic bifurcation clearly. Dionysius’ distinctionbetween “austere” (austêra) and “polished” (glaphyra) forms of composition makes theidentification of the prominent bifurcation between the styles of Bacchylides and Pindar possible. Defining this stylistic bifurcation accurately is only possible by scrutinizing thecategories represented by the music in the archaic epoch, which is an integral part of epinician poetry. These musical categories clarify how the style chosen by the Archaic Greek poet is parallel to the ethical references of the performed music of epinician. In thispaper which takes its point of departure from the above-mentioned stylistic bifurcation, I will argue that both poets have their “unique” expressions in stylistic contexts via acomparative study of some pieces of Bacchylides’ and Pindar’s victory odes.

Keywords: austere style, Bacchylides, epinician poetry, Pindar, polished style, stylistic bifurcation.

PINDAROS’TA AŞK BÜYÜSÜ: APHRODITE’NIN “DİVÂNE (EDEN) KUŞU” IYNKS’ÜN KERAMETİ / LOVE MAGIC IN PINDAR: THE MIRACULOUS DEED OF APHRODITE’S “MAD(DENING) BIRD” IYNX

Pindaros’ta Aşk Büyüsü: Aphrodite’nin “Divâne (Eden) Kuşu” Iynks’ün Kerameti

2013, "Pindaros’ta Aşk Büyüsü: Aphrodite’nin “Divâne (Eden) Kuşu” Iynks'ün Kerameti [Miraculous Deed of Aphrodite's "Mad(dening) Bird" Iynx]." Mediterranean Journal of Humanities 3/1: 155-170.

Özet
Bu makale, dili ve üslubundaki çift anlamlılıkla sıklıkla tartışma konusu edilen Pindaros’un dizelerinden hareketle (Pin. Pyth. Id. II. 17) da bahsedilmesine rağmen, Arkaik Hellen Şiiri bağlamında bir tek Pindaros’ta ele alınır. Bu ritüelin niteliği, işlevi ve ritüelde yer alan aktörlere dair ayrıntılı bir çözümlenme, filolojinin metin bazlı temel yaklaşımlarından din tarihinin sunduğu verilere, tarihsel ornitolojiden arkeolojiye geniş bir spektruma odaklanmayı gerektirmektedir. Sonuçta, söz konusu ritüelin kimi safhaları aydınlatılmaya, ilgili büyü uygulamasının ve aygıtlarının tarihsel süreçteki gelişimi serimlenmeye ve büyü uygulamalarından Yeni Platonculuk’un kozmolojik kurgularına iynks’le ‘sınır’ fikri arasındaki ilişki soruşturulmaya çalışılacaktır.

Love Magic in Pindar: The Miraculous Deed of Aphrodite’s “Mad(dening) Bird” Iynx

Abstract
This article aims to scrutinise an aspect of the extensive problematic on “love magic” starting from the Pindaric verses (Pin. Pyth. IV. 214-219) which are often discussed because of the ambiguity in his language and style. It is pointed out the another facet of the well known Iason-Medeia mythos in the epinician that was composed by Pindar for the victor of Pythian Games (462 BCE) Cyrenean Arcesilas. It is addressed only in Pindar in Archaic Greek Poetry, although the details of the this magic which is practiced with the bird named iynx was mentioned by Theocritus (Id. II. 17) in the late epoche. A detailed analysis on characteristic, function, and agents of this ritual demands a focus on a large spectrum from the main textual approach of philology to the data supplied by history of religion, from historical ornitology to archaeology. In conclusion, it will be endeavoured to clear some phases of the aforementioned ritual, to expose the historical development of the related magical practice and its instruments; and also to explore the relation between iynx and the idea of limit from magical practices to the cosmological speculations of Neo-Platonism.

ARKAİK YUNAN ȘİİRİNDE AD, ADLANDIRMA VE HAKİKAT İLİȘKİSİ: PINDAROS’UN ZAFER ȘARKILARINDA (YENİDEN-)ADLANDIRMA/ THE RELATIONS BETWEEN NAME, NAMING AND TRUTH IN ARCHAIC GREEK POETRY: (RE-)NAMING IN PINDAR’S VICTORY ODES

Pindaros’ta ad(landırma) aslında “doğuștan gelen”i adlandırır, dolayısıyla adın tam anlamıyla ifșa edilmesi de “doğuștan gelen”in gözler önüne serilmesini, yani bireyin doğumuyla edindiği soykütüksel, toplumsal, iktisadî, ruhsal, bedensel niteliklerin tamamının ifșa edilmesi anlamına gelir. Ad(landırma) Pindaros’un șiirsel tekhnê’siyle biçimlendirdiği yeniden-adlandırmayla pekiștirilir. Sonuç olarak, adın dolayısıyla “doğuștan gelen”in sophos-șair tarafından yeniden-adlandırılarak “hakkaniyetle” ifșa edilmesi, muzaffer atletin yanı sıra, onun mensubu olduğu ailenin, așiretin, kent-devletinin hatta bir bütün olarak Pan-Hellenik toplumun hakikat alanında özünü sürdürmesinin teminatı haline gelir.

ABSTRACT
The Relations between Name, Naming and Truth in Archaic Greek Poetry: (Re-)Naming in Pindar’s Victory Odes

In this dissertation the relationship between name, naming and truth is defined in a general framework from the beginning of Archaic Greek Poetry until the Classical epoch, and it is analyzed how the seizure of addressing this problem shed light on the successors of Pindar in his victory odes. Accordingly, it is observed that the historical progress of the conception of “nature” is the basic dynamics of differentiation in poetry. Advancing from Homeric “nature” that is solely based upon physical data towards “nature” as an abstract concept that gained a fully political and moral style in Classical philosophers, Pindar’s approaches in his poetry, which he developed by means of “innate”, form a bridge between the aforementioned opposite poles. This “bridge” has an important role in the unique expression of the relationship between name, naming and truth in Pindar. The ways of nam[e](ing) in the indication of truth, which is investigated from the magic of name in Homer through Hesiod, where it becomes a convenient tool in the construction of kosmos, appears as the first phase of this course. In the second phase, the relation between name/naming and truth continues to develop in different directions ranging from genealogically based social conflicts to religious rituals, from class divergence brought upon by economic transformation to aristocratic satirical discourse, owing to the varied poetic utterance forms and occasions of lyric poetry. In Pindar’s “occasional” victory odes, the power of name/naming inherited from poetic tradition is effectively used for the victorious athlete’s “innate” side to carry on its essence. In Pindar, name/naming actually names the “innate”; therefore, the full exposure of the name means the exhibition of the “innate,” is the total exposure of the genealogical, social, economic, spiritual and corporal qualities of the individual that are acquired at birth. Name/naming is reinforced with re-naming which Pindar shapes with his poetic tekhnê. Consequently, the exposure “with righteousness” by means of re-naming of the name ergo the “innate” by the sophos-poet becomes the guarantee of the continuation of the essence in the realm of truth, not only for the victorious athlete but also the family, clan and city-state to which he belongs, even the Pan-Hellenic society as a whole.
